Only four landraces of maize been used with breeding purposes out of the fourty reported landraces in Mexico. The landraces are: Chalqueno, Conico, Celaya and Tuxpeno. The reasons why the remaining fourty landraces have not been used are narrow adaptability and higher plants and ears. In this research the landraces of the Pacific coast and Southeast have been improved by limited backcrossing. The method consists in crossing the landrace to an improved population. In RCO-F2 desirable genotypes are backcrossed to the landrace and in RCI-FI intermating is made among selected plants. Preliminary results show 7 and 13 % of superiority in RCI-FI and RCI-F2, respectively, over the recurrent parent. These results are probably due to selection made when passing from F1 to F2.
