The evolution of the corn breeding program carried by INIFAP and its preceding institutions is analysed. Corn breeding began at high and medium lands, which are considered of high ecological productivity; thereafter it mared to the tropics. Around the same number of free pollination varieties and hybrids have been generated; hybrids have been formed for irrigation and good rainfall conditions.
