Intercropping studies with sweet potato and corn in Trinidad and Tobago.

Sweet potato is often intercropped with corn and a series of studies were conducted to determine the effect of corn on the productivity of sweet potato. It was found that sweet potato yields declined as corn population increased from 18,000 to 37,000 plants/ha. The relative planting date of sweet potato in relation to corn affected the yields of both corn and sweet potato. Yields of sweet potato when planted before corn were similar to those in pure stands. Sweet potato cultivars differed markedly in their response to intercropping with corn. Cultivars O49 and A28/7 were little affected by intercropping whereas TIS2328/6 and C26/7 were greatly affected. Studies suggest that there is intense competition for nutrients in particular nitrogen and potassium when the crops are grown together. Differential response of sweet potato cultivars to nitrogen when intercropped has been noted.
