Influence of host plant on the development and annual generations of the cabbage looper Trichoplusia ni (Hb.) in Egypt.

The influence of four cruciferous host plants viz: cabbage, cauliflower, turnip and radish on rate of development, mortality, weight of immatures, fecundity and number of annual generations of Trichoplusia ni was experimentally investigated. Host plants exerted no effect on the number of annual generations. Cabbage was the most favourable host plant. Larval developemnt was accelerated when fed on cabbage leaves and somewhat retarded on radish. Larval diet also had enormous effect on pupal duration, generation period and adult longevity. Females fed as larvae on cabbage laid the highest number of fertile eggs. Weights of the different stages were the heaviest when their larvae were fed on cabbage or cauliflower leaves.
