The sustainable use of tropical forest and the forest floor is a key element in halting deforestation in tropical areas. Taking the example of Napo and Sucumbios Province in Amazonia in Ecuador a few options for sustainable use are discussed: hunting, fishing, commercial extraction, eco-tourism, and sustainable natural forest management as a way of using those rain forests that have survived, while agro-forestry is examined as a possible way of using areas already cleared. The chances these options present are presented, as are their limitations. An effective strategy to protect the forest can only be established on the basis of a combination of various uses.
