Qualitative composition of humus compounds in lignite from Gbely mine, Slovakia, and alkalic humates processed from it either in the solid form (87-88 % dry matter content) or in the sodium humate extract (10 % d.m.content). The evaluation is focused on determination of humic and fluvic acid contents, their ratios, hydrolytic acidity, sum of exchangeable basic cations, sorption capacity and saturation level. The effect of increased doses of humic compounds in the early growth and developmental stages of spring barley on root and shoot biomass was studied under laboratory conditions. The lignite from Gbely mine has the highest content of humic compounds among Slovakian coal mines and has a balanced ratio of humic and fulvic acids. It is suitable for processing of alkalic humates. The root and shoot biomass of spring barley plants was increased after alkalic humates application in laboratory biological experiments.
