The 4-year investigations with alfalfa as test crop showed that positive changes of the chemical composition of the soil occured as a result of liming, though to a limited extent. They had a positive effect on the yield of alfalfa hay. Effects of the factors investigated in the trial varied considerably. While liming and application of mineral nitrogen had a good effect on the yield of alfalfa hay, seed inoculation, as a biological measure, had no effect whatsoever. This points to the conclusion that fertilization with mineral nitrogen should be obligatory in alfalfa growing until preconditions are created for an efficient effect of inoculation, which is, in our opinion, mainly hindered by excessive acidity. Interactional activity of discrete factors (liming X nitrogen, liming X inoculation, nitrogen X inculation an liming X nitrogen X inoculation) is changeable and unreliable in relation to the yield of alfalfa hay, though it is present in some combinations, whereas in some others, such as nitrogen X inoculation, it is not even to be expected.
