The physico-chemical characteristics of the purified almaciga (Agathis philippinensis) resin and its essential oils were analyzed. The resin acids were found to predominate the ethyl ether-soluble fraction of the resin. This explains the high acid and saponification value of the resin. The Almaciga resin essential oil was found to possess the following characteristics: viscosity (at 25 deg C)-0.5467 centipoise: refractive index (at 20 deg C)-1.4714: specific gravity (25P/25 deg C)-0.8631: acid value-0.560 mg KOH/g sample: saponification value-12.81 mg KOH/g sample: unsaponifiable matter - 0.49 percent: iodine value (Wijs method) - 37.46 cg iodine/g sample: Hydroxyl content - 13.2 g KOH/g sample: and Hehner's number - 2.00. The oil was also analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. The following major components were identified: alpha-pinene, B-pinene, limonene, and para-nenth-1-en-8-ol. These components are also present in several plant essential oils being used in perfumes and pharmaceuticals. This indicates that almaciga resin essential oil could have similar potential uses.
