Seedling of Cicer arietinum L. were trasplanted (T) and root development and shoot growth studied in comparison with plants which had not been trasplanted (DS). The work was carried out in greenhouse conditions with compost in polythile bags (15 cm diam. and 100 cm long) as containers and plant samplings were made when the plants reached the maturity stage. Root growth, shoot height, dry weight of root and shoot, root volume and number of lateral roots were bigger in DS plants than in T plants from 15 to 30 days after the initiation of the treatment. At the end of the experiment, T plants had 10 percent shorter roots and shoots, 60 percent less shoot dry weight, 38 percent less root volume and 64 percent less lateral roots than DS plants.
