In the mare, both the seasonal anoestrous and the transitional period to the breeding season are times of reproductive inefficiency. The ultrasonography allows to visualize and study the genital tract during these stages thus allowing the optimization of the fertility rates imposed to the thoroughbred during the breeding season. On this basis, the monthly differences between May and September in the size of oovarys, follicles, uterine horns and cervix of 16 thoroughbred mares belonging to the Matancilla's stud farm, located in the 7th region of Chile, were studied. According to the stud management, from June 1st to August 3rd, 1989, all the females were subjected to a treatment consisting of 16 hours of artificial light followed by 8 hours of darkness. Throughout the period of photostimulation they were fed with alfalfa and oats. From May to September of the same year, and using ultrasonography the following measurements were taken: ovarys length and width (mm), the main diameter of both uterine horns (base, half and tip of them), follicles more than 5 mm diameter (establishing their monthly average number), cervix (cranea) and distal openings and the corpus luteum detection. Concerning the ovary size, only the left ovary showed a tendency to the monthly variation in contrast to the right one whose variation was significant. The main follicular diameter, in both ovaries, maintained their values almost constant during the study, except in June which showed the highest value. Not all the different uterine horns segments (tip, half and base) changed in a significant way, thus showing an asynchrony in their answers to the ovarian stimulation. The monthly change of the craneal and distal cervix width showed a progressive increase which was a good indicator of the transition stage to the breeding season.
