Barley yield and responses to planting date, seed rate and N fertilizer in the Lake Chad Basin of Nigeria.

Trials were conducted to find the optimal planting date, seed rate and N fertilizer level for barley cultivated in the Lake Chad Basin of Nigeria. The trials were carried out during 3 cold and dry harmattan seasons. The crop was drilled each year at fortnightly intervals, at seed rates of 100, 150 and 200 kg/ha. Nitrogen was applied as ammonium sulphate, broadcast at rates of 0, 25, 50 and 100 kg N/ha immediately after drilling. Drilling in early to mid-November showed higher yields than drilling at a later date. During the 3 seasons, plant height and numbers of tillers and spike/0.2 sq m decreased with subsequent drilling. The mean barley plant height, number of tillers and spikes/unit area, length of spike and number of grains/spike increased with increase in N fertilization from 0-100 kg N/ha. Seed rate treatments differed significantly from each other in terms of grain yield (P 0.05). Grain yields were highest at the lowest seed rate of 100 kg/ha at all seasons. Plant height and yield components were inversely related to seed rate.
