Ameliorating the soil physical properties of the Piarco fine sandy loam and the effect on sugarcane growth and yield.

Subsurface drainage (10.5m, 18.0m, 22.5m and no drains), and liquid feedlot manure application on Piarco fine sandy loam in Trinidad was investigated. Bulk density of soil, water-table height and soil moisture content were lower in the drained land, and bulk density and water-table depth were significantly negatively correlated with drain spacing. The drained, cultivated field at 18.0m spacing had the tallest plants, highest root weight/cc soil and highest yields. The beneficial effects of subsurface drainage were lost by the fourth year. Two applications of liquid feedlot manure (6 and 8 months), at concentrations 280 and 140 g/litre, S2 and S1, respectively and at 14, 28 and 42 tonnes/ha, F1, F2 and F3 respectively, were made to sugarcane plants. Manure applied at S2 F2 had the best overall yield results, and N content of leaves was significantly higher (P = 0.001). However, high N content resulted in lower brix and high moisture content in cane, which lowered juice quality. Non-significant differences between double and single applications showed that after 6 months a second application was not beneficial.
