Effects of spacing on the yield of marketable fruits of eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) type 'Oguanhwoa'.

Planting distances were 1m x 90 cm; 90 x 90 cm; 90 x 80 cm; 90 x 70 cm; 90 x 60 cm and 75 x 60 cm arranged in such a manner that area per plant decreased by a constant factor of 0.09/sq m per plant from 0.9 to 0.45 sq m. It was found that the 2 closer spacings of 90 x 60 cm and 75 x 60 cm significantly outyielded all other treatments in terms of number and weight of marketable fruits. The number of discarded fruits increased rapidly as plants became more closely spaced, the number doubling from the widest to the closest spacing. Total yields of fruits increased steadily from first to the fourth harvest and declined thereafter. Plant spread was significantly greater (P = 0.05) at the two wider spacings than at the closest spacing. The widest spacing gave the lowest yields of both marketable and unmarketable fruits.
