The results of a comprehensive, longitudinal nutrition study initiated in 1976 to assess how and what mothers in Canada fed their infants in their own homes are summarized and discussed for nutritionists and other health professionals. The study focused on 3 areas: (1) what foods Canadian infants consumed from birth to 18 months of age; (2) the nutritional adequacy of the diets employed; and (3) the growth and development of their infants. Topics included infant feeding practice and factors influencing them; growth measurements, obesity potential, and the effect of maternal cigarette smoking on infant growth; breast feeding and the use of breast milk substitutes; assessments of macro-nutrient and micro-nutrient intakes; and the use and nutrient content of commercial baby foods. Guidelines for infant feeding derived from this study are summarized. A description of the study methodology and population profile, and tabular data summaries of physical measurements and of nutrient intakes by non-breastfed intakes, are appended. (wz).
