The peat bog shrub species (Andromeda polifolia L., Ledum palustre L., Vaccinium uliginosum L., Oxycoccus palustris PERS., O. microcarpus TURCZ. ex RUPR.) from the families Vacciniaceae and Ericaceae were studied. Besides the main vegetative reproduction of these species in natural stands (localities in the Orava region and Tatra mountains) they are also capable of generative reproduction. However, only a lowered number of ovules develop into fertile seeds with normally developed embryos. In 1994 it was 27.5 % in Andromeda polifolia, 82.5 % in Ledum palustre, 57.5 % in Vaccinium uliginosum, 45 % in Oxycoccus palustris and none in Oxycoccus microcarpus. Analysis of this phenomenon demands a more profound study. Some cytological characteristics of anthers, ovules, the embryo sac, endosperm and embryo development were more precisely defined.
