Effect of season on the live weight changes of grade cattle (native x Brahman) grazing on themada grassland.

Statistical analysis indicated significant relationship between seasonality of rainfall and herbage yield (r=.52). Seasonal fluctuation in herbage quality and quantity was clearly manifested in the erratic liveweight changes of all the animals. Both groups showed similar pattern of weight changes from rainy season to dry season although mature animals indicated more erratic liveweight changes. Growing calves had higher liveweight changes and higher liveweight gain than the mature animals. Magnitude of gain was higher during rainy season due to high forage availability, increased nutrient content and improved palatability of the native grass.
