The thawing salts CMA and NaCl applied in amounts equivalent to those usually recommended for streets and highways in winter show acute toxicity to Folsomia candida (collembola) already after two days in a test using activated charcoal-plaster and filter paper as substrate. On artificial OECD-soil and soil from the field NaCl is less toxic as on filter paper. Under laboratory conditions soils are not suitable for tests with CMA as already amounts of 1.5 g m(-2) CMA are letal for the test animals, which might be due to unknown reactions of CMA with humin substances. Determination of LC(50) and LC(90) for 5 and 15 animals per test tube and both salts on filter paper reveal that the mortality with CMA is the same as if the half amount of NyCl is applied. Mortality also rises when 15 animals per test tube have been used. The negative effect of CMA on the hatching rate of F. candida is stronger than of NaCl. With regard to the present data, elsewhere published results of field studies and the fact, that in practice twice as much CMA must be brought out than NaCl, this thawing salt seems not to be less harmful than NaCl.
