In a pig fattening trial the feeding level and the keeping system were varied to study their effects on carcass composition and the cost of pasturing. Three systems were compared: two conventional indoor housing systems with planned growth rates of 800 and 650 g/day respectively, and one pasture system with an intended growth rate of 800 g/day. The pigs of the pasture group had access to pasture for two hours per day. Previous findings were confirmed, particularly the fact that pasturing corresponds to the very nature and disposition of the pig. In addition, the daily activity on pasture improves the constitution and carcass composition. On the other hand, pasturing involves the risk of parasitic infections leading to stress and reduced meat deposition. The costs were calculated on the basis of two assumptions: pasturing of pigs as an alternative to hay, which is sold, or to green fallow.
