Determination of the tannin and extractive substances in bark and leaves of the common ash at the territory of S.R. Bosnia and Herzegovina (S.F.R. Yugoslavia) has been carried out. Besides the determination, the identification of the tannin substances has been done by the application of chromatography on a thin layer of G silica gel and by UV and IR spectrophotometry. During the investigation it has been found that bark of the common ash Fraxinus oxycarpa Willd. var. mediterana contains mostly tannin materials and that tannins from the investigated species of the common ash belong to the group of gallotannins with an admixture of condensed (catechin) compounds.
