Commercial culture of the marine gastropod Trochus niloticus in Torres Strait: its feasibility and prospects. [Seminar address].
1986
Nash W.
There is a renewed demand for trochus shell on the world market, for use as buttons in the fashion industry. However the species is vulnerable to over-fishing, and trochus stocks of all major shell exporting countries have become depleted. Replenishment of fished trochus populations with hatchery-reared juveniles appears the most effective management option, as other conservation measures have been found ineffectual or difficult to enforce. The establishment of a trochus hatchery in Torres Strait is feasible, but stocks of trochus in the region must be large enough to justify the commitment of money, equipment and personnel.
