DEUTSCH: Studied was the returning of moles to a meadow ground (which is inhibited regularly and in quite a big number by Talpa europaea) at the bank of the river Eder in North Hesse after flooding. The 17 acres large area - in the east bounded in its full length by a railway embankment (32 feet high) and beeing enclosed by the river from the other sides - was inundated completely between March 11 and March 15, 1981. Already on March 16 new signs of mole activity (surface runs) could be discovered at the bottom of the embankment. These were followed by the first molehills on March 18 and four days later activities of their digging could be proved on the meadow in a distance as far as 328 feet in front of the embankment. Three weeks after the end of the flooding the whole area had again been integrated by the moles into their range of activity. The inundation had not led to a long-lasting interruption of the moles' lives in the meadow. The recolonization took place from the direction of the embankment that had obviously served the animals as an area of retreat from the water. Aspects of homing in moles and the meaning of learning processes in this context are being discussed.
