An evaluation of wheat diseases in the Northern, Central and Southern regions of Jordan in 1984/85 and 1985/86.

Fifty fields of wheat representing three physiographic regions in Jordan have been investigated during two successive seasons (1984/85 and 1985/86). An evaluation of the geographic distribution, number of attacked fields in each region and disease incidence was done along with a severity estimation in the case of foliar diseases. Disease incidence and severity were recorded at heading stage (11.1) when the grains were milky ripe. Eleven fungal diseases, two bacterial and the seed gall nematode were found distributed on wheat in the three climatically different regions. Those diseases were more severe in the northern region than other regions, e.g. rust incidence in the north was approximately 1.5 to 2.5 times higher than that of the central and southern regions respectively. Brown (Leaf) rust was found to be the most common disease attacking wheat in Jordan, followed in descending order by yellow rust, black stem rust, powdery mildew and spot blotch. This is the first report of tan spot, septoria leaf blotch, head blight, bacterial leaf streak and bacterial leaf blight in Jordan.
