In vivo effect of cadmium on photochemical activities in chloroplasts of runner bean plants.
1991
Tukendorf A. | Baszynski T.
Cd-treated runner bean plants were used to investigate the effect of Cd on plastid pigment concentration and chloroplast photochemical activity. Reduction of chlorophyll and carotenoid accumulation depended on Cd concentration in the nutrient medium. The presence of Mn in the growth medium reduced the inhibitory influence of Cd on the level of plastid pigments and photochemical activities, as well as Cd concentration in plant organs. The low Cd content in chloroplasts and the accompanying decrease of their photochemical activities are discussed in relation to the requirement of the metal for the inhibition of photosynthesis in invitro experiments.
