Effects of nematode control on shoot; root and mycorrhizal development of Pinus radiata seedlings growing in a nursery soil infested with Pratylenchus penetrans [Fenamiphos; nematicide].

The nematicide Fenamiphos reduced the root lesion nematode (Pratylenchus penetrans) populations within the roots to barely detectable levels. Seedling growth was strongly stimulated, apparently due to nematode eradication rather than to any growth stimulation by the nematicide. The presence of nematodes reduced root length, shoot height, visible carbohydrate reserves and mycorrhizal development, while the number of black dichotomously-branched lateral roots was greatly increased.
