The objectives of this trial was to demonstrate the technology of grain veal production and study the effects of two qualities of fish meal in the supplement on productive performance. Twenty-four bull Holstein X Friesian calves, with an initial age of 94 ac. ds. were randomly distributed in 2 treatments with 3 replicates of 4 calves each. After an adaptation period of 12 ds they were fed a ration consisting of 3 parts of whole corn grain plus 1 part of a pelletted protein supplement. Calves on treatment I received a supplement "P" which had 25% of a fish meal classified as prime and calves on treatment II received a supplement "S" with the same level of fish meal but classified as standard. Each group of calves received their respective rations ad libitum plus water. The trial finished when 23 of the 24 calves reached 200 kg live weight. Initial, mid-trial (42 ds) and final weights (84 ds on trial) were 85.2, 140.5 and 213.8 for treatment I and 83.4, 138.8 and 201.8 kg for treatment II; these differences were not statistically significant (P > 0,05). Total and daily weight gains were 128,6 kg and 1,53 kg/day for treatment I and 118.3 kg and 1.41 kg/day for treatment II (P > 0,05). During the second half of the trial, that is between 42 and 84 ds, calves on treatment I gained 73,25 kg of liveweight and 1,74 kg/day while calves on treatment II gained 63,00 kg of liveweight and 1,50 kg/day (P < 0,05). Total feed DM intake and feed efficiencies were 347,2 kg and 2,71 kg DM/kg of gain (treatment I) and 333,00 kg and 2,84 kg DM/kg of gain (treatment II) (P > 0,05). Carcass yield was estimated with a sample of the calves and was 55,4 (n=7) and 54,8% (n=8) for treatment I and II respectively. It is concluded that the type of ration studied produces a very satisfactory veal; the fish meal of better quality (classified as "prime") showed an advantage over the standard product only when considering the gain during the last 42 ds of the trial.
