Double-rows planting should allow more sun light to penetrate to lower leaves, thus, might increase yield of groundnut. To investigate such an effect, a study was conducted at Tha Phra, Khon Kaen, in the rainy seasons of 1985, 1986 and 1987, comparing different patterns of double-rows planting with the regular single-row planting using a randomized complete block design with four replicates. Results of the trial in 1985 indicated that the 40-60 cm. double-rows planting pattern with two plants/hill gave a yield increase of 7.2 % over the regular single-row planting. Contrasting results were obtained in 1986 in which the 40-60 cm. double-rows planting yielded 7.7 % less than the single-row planting. In 1987, however, the 40-60 cm. double-rows gave an average yield 9.5 % higher than the single-rows planting. Higher number of pods/hill and higher plant fresh weight were also observed for the 40-60 cm. double-rows planting. Closer row spacing of the double-rows planting resulted in a yield reduction. Double rows planting at 40-60 cm. would be suitable for groundnut cultivar Tainan 9 and other cultivars with similar plant type.
