Backfat Deposition and Utilization During the Reproductive Cycle of Gilts.
1994
Lember A.
Two experiments were carried out to study the dynamics of body weight and backfat depth of young gilts depending on the level of feeding during the different periods of the reproductive cycle. In both experiments the body weight of weaned gilts surpassed their body weight at first mating. During the reproductive cycle the body weight of the gilts of the first group increased by 4.2 kg and by 3.0 kg of gilts in the second experiment. The phenomenon of different backfat depth became apparent - at the moment of weaning gilts have less backfat than at the moment of mating. In the first experiment the backfat depth of gilts was 7.6 mm and in the second experiment 12.6 mm thinner than at mating. Consequently, the balance of body weight during the reproductive cycle was positive, but negative for the fat.
