Twenty male Frison calves, 3 to 6 days of age at the beginning of the trial, were randomly assigned to two treatments (milk replacers). One replacer (Protinal) had a high level of starch (43,2% total starch, 32.0% gelatinized starch), the second (Fokkamel) did not contain starch. The replacers were given at a daily rate of 4 lts (12,5% dry matter) in two equal portions during the first 4 weeks and only at 2 lts a day during 2 additional weeks. Calves were kept in individual cages bedded with straw. In addition to the respective replacer they were offered a commercial, pelletized starter and water, from the first day of the trial. After weaning, which was abrupt (43 ds) calves were offered the same starter for an additional period of 12 days. Feed intake was recorded daily and during the whole trial once a week calves were weighed and withers height and heart girth were registered. After 28 days on trial 3 calves on the Protinal milk replacer treatment had to be changed to the other replacer as they had shown a very poor growth. The statistics were then calculated using a number of calves per treatment of 11 for each treatment to day 28 and 8 (Protinal) and 11 (Fokkamel) from 29 ds to the end of the trial. Average daily gains during the period 1 - 28 days were significantly (P < 0,05) lower for calves on the Protinal milk replacer (0,09 kg/ds) as compared to the calves on Fokkamel (0,27 kg/ds). At weaning total feed efficiency (kg increase of weight/kg dry matter consumed) was significantly better for calves on the Fokkamel (0,44) than on the Protinal replacer (0,31). However, body weights at day 1 and after 28 days on trial were not significantly (P > 0,05) different. Gains from day 1 to weaning and from weaning to 12 days after weaning were better for calves on Fokkamel but did not differ statistically (P > 0,05). Withers height and heart were girth of significantly different at days 1,28 and 43 between treatments.
