Antimicrobial and cytotoxic compounds from Prosopis vidaliana Naves.

Prosopis vidaliana Naves (Leguminosae) is locally known as 'aroma'. It is found abundant in mangroves forming dense tickets along seashores. Studies conducted on several species of Prosopis have shown bactericidal and antifungal activities. In addition, extracts of some species were also found to be cytotoxic. This biological activity has been linked to their alkaloids content which are mostly of the piperidine type. Antimicrobial activity of the alcohol extract of the leaves of Prosopis vidaliana was evaluated using representative microorganisms, namely, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27253, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, and Candida albicans. Results indicate a broad range of activity due to its ability to inhibit both the gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and yeasts. The crude extract also displayed cytotoxicity in the brine shrimp assay with LC50 = 35.69 ug/ml. The crude extract was separated into fractions of different polarity followed by column chromatography. The antimicrobial activity of the fractions was monitored using paper disc method and bioautography. Cytotoxicity was monitored using the brine shrimp assay. This bioassay-directed scheme resulted in the isolation of two antimicrobial and cytotoxic alkaloids. This paper will present the isolation and identification of the antimicrobial and cytotoxic compounds from Prosopis vidaliana.
