Fluoride intake of infants through herbal teas in relation to the need for water fluoridation.

The present study was directed towards identifying the major components of Lebanese infants' diet, and assessing their contribution to fluoride intake. Major emphasis was placed on herbal teas, an inherent feature of the Lebanese culture. Results indicate a widespread pattern of utilization for both rural and urban communities. This pattern is characterized by the administration of specific types of herbs; tea; anise; zouhourat and mint for specific age groups and for a variety of purposes ranging from simple habit to alleviation of sicknesses. Determination of the fluoride content of the indicated herbs showed a wide range of variability. Overall contribution to fluoride intake through this dietary component may satisfy up to 132% of the minimum recommended safe daily intake of infants. In light of the findings and taken into consideration the limitations of the survey, no final decision can be made in relation to adopting the practice of water fluoridation before additional pilot surveys directed towards assessing (a) the fluoride intake of infants from all sources including food, (b) the fluoride intake of other important risk groups, and (c) the actual magnitude of the dental health problem in Lebanon, are undertaken.
