Application of heat pump systems allows for efficient utilization of energy potential of low enthalpy (subgeothermal) ground waters. In practice, there are several ways to use heat pump systems for heating and/or cooling of buildings. Besides being energetically favourable, utilization of heat pump systems enables significant economic savings. In terms of environmental protection, the most interesting application of these systems is in urban areas/environment where they could be used for replacement of existing fossil-fuel based heating facilities with high emissions of pollutants. For complete perceiving of sustainability of these systems it is necessary to pay special attention to the mode of discharge of used water into the environment.
