Continuous rise in milk production in the intensive dairy farming has been accompanied with decreased reproduction efficiency. All dairy cows during early lactation period have negative energy balance and have to go through the adaptation process initiated by the increased metabolic demands and limited food intake. A profound change in the dairy cows metabolism occurring in transition period could have negative impact on the health and reproduction. General rule is that dairy cows with different health disorders, diagnosed in peripartal period (metabolic and reproductive organs diseases, locomotion disorders etc.) have decreased reproductive efficiency. Evaluation of the reproduction efficiency is usually performed by determining parameters such as open days periods, calving interval, number of services per conception, conception risk and pregnancy rate. Objective value of many enlisted parameters can be questioned according to the inclusion criteria for dairy cows used for their calculation. Statistical analysis of reproductive efficiency parameters which are by nature intervals of time is not often suitable to the type of data and their biological significance. Therefore we have to continuously reevaluate existing and try to find more objective parameters of reproductive efficiency in dairy cows, and modify our decisions regarding dairy cows health management, nutrition and reproduction control.
