Sludge generated in biological treatment of municipal wastewater has been used for a long time in agriculture due to their content of organic matter and compounds of P and N. In addition to the above matter, sludge contains heavy metals and organic micropollutants (PCB, LAS, PAH, NP/NPEO, dioxins and furans). The use of sewage sludge/derived fertilizer in agriculture may lead to the emergence of persistent compounds in food products intended for humans or animals. The paper discusses the chemical and toxicological properties of organic pollutants in sludge. Recommendations from the European Commission and several countries about their guideline values are also presented.
