The logging of the trees on the banks of the Nera River occurs, both frequently and illegally, on Serbian and Romanian territories. These trees are an important component of the common cross border ecosystem of Nera which hosts the habitat of many bird species. The area affected by the cutting of the trees is located near the Balta Nera – Dunăre nature reserve (Romania) and the Ramsar wetland area of Labudovo Okno (Serbia). In the absence of the reaction of the authorities, in 2012, the Ecological Cooperation Group and Aurora Association decided to cooperate with the goal to conduct the watchdog and advocacy activities related to the identifying and punishing the responsible for illegal cutting of trees on the Nera. For this purpose, the environmental monitoring of the common ecosystem of the Nera, the requests for the points of view from the local and central media with the goal of increase the responsiveness capacity of the authorities to the phenomenon of the illegal cutting of the trees were achieved.
