The elemental composition of red wines from two important wine-producing Spanish regions (Ribera del Guadiana and Méntrida) was used in a multivariate statistical analysis to discriminate the wines according to their geographical origin. A total of 19 elements were analysed by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry. By using the element concentrations as chemical descriptors, both classes of certified red wines were perfectly discriminated, when applying pattern recognition techniques such as principal component analysis and linear discriminant analysis. Specifically, linear discriminant analysis using As, Cd, Cu, Li, Pb and Sr led to 97% and 88% recognition ability, respectively, for Ribera del Guadiana and Méntrida red wines.
