The paper gives an overview of the data on mercury content in forest soils collected during the soil inventory in the set of permanent monitoring plots of Slovakia within the European project BioSoil. The demonstration project BioSoil was part was implementation of EU regulation Forest Focus (Regulation for Monitoring of forests and environmental interactions). The results show that Hg conent is still strongly influenced not only by geochemical properties of parent material but also by anthropogenic emissions of mercury from industrial sources in the second half of the 20th century. In general, Hg concentrations are comparable to values measured in agricultural soils within other surveys. However, mainly the concentratians of mercury in surface organic layer show strong contamination in regions with former heavy metal load.
