Haiphong - environmental management plan

The environmental impacts of the Three Cities Sanitation Project vary according to the city and sub-component. In the Da Nang Sanitation Project wastewater component, impacts include: a) during construction: increased air pollution, increased discharge of water pollutants affecting land, water, and inhabitants; b) during operation; decrease in water, air and soil pollution. The Da Nang Solid Waste component will have both negative (due to the new landfill and increased transportation of waste) and positive (increased capability to collect & manage solid waste) impacts. The location of the Halong landfill component will not cause any serious negative impacts on natural flora and fauna, though care must be taken to not endanger the local drinking water source. The drainage and sewerage system in Halong will have an overall positive impact, especially in the aquatic and human environment, although to insure this, mitigation measures including water control and leachate management must be implemented. The Haiphong component will improve the overall urban sanitation, positively affecting the human and aquatic environment, although untreated waste water discharge will continue the contamination of river water. Mitigation of this would include the installation and regular de-sludging of septic tanks connected to sewers.
