SMEs' demand for business development services in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Business development services (BDS), as defined for the purpose of this report, is an array of non-financial services, critical for small and medium scale enterprises (SMEs), in their ability to compete, survive, and grow in their respective industries. Based on data collected in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the areas of development strategy, marketing, accounting and finance, information and production technology, as well as human resources management, and legal and regulatory framework, the study focused on advisory, and training services, of industries in the fields of agribusiness, construction, information technology, and road transport in the country. Findings suggest a high degree of awareness for a wide range of consulting services, while most SMEs were aware of marketing-related consulting services, and similarly, high awareness degrees were found for training programs. The study is one of the first steps in the process of building an effective BDS network in the country, and results indicate there is a demand for such services, already being satisfactorily used. However, the study also shows that additional consulting, and training services are required for capacity building, in order to maximize the value of SMEs.
