Cuba : economic change and education reform 1955-1974

The nature of the extensive educational reforms that have taken place in Cuba since the revolution are examined. Education and educational change in revolutionary Cuba became a symbol of the Revolution, with mass education becoming a means to mass economic participation. Among the most important aspects of the educational reform was a massive program of adult education including a nine-month literacy campaign. The school became the cutting edge of developing consciousness among children and adults of their roles in the new Cuban society. Primary and secondary schooling was extended into rural areas and educational output was fitted more closely to the economy's manpower needs. If Cuban-type reforms are to be made in other developing countries, a much larger fraction of GNP must be devoted to education.
