Environmental impact assessment for reconstruction of Ayanfuri-Asawinso Road (52km)

The overarching development objective of the Abidjan-Lagos Transport and Transit Facilitation Project (ALTTFP) is to enhance economic growth in Western Africa by facilitating movement of goods and people along the coastal corridor and increasing regional integration among the countries crossed by the corridor. The identification of negative impacts has been made on the basis of a scoping study (scoping) in which were listed: 1) air pollutant emissions; 2) effects on noise levels; 3) destruction of the soil and landscape; 4) impact on surface water; 5) impact on natural vegetation; 6) impact on wildlife; and 7) impact on the well-being and health of coastal populations. Mitigation measures include: 1) preventing contamination of rivers; 2) planning and executing earth works with due diligence to prevent soil erosion; 3) minimizing dust generation within the settlements by applying water to exposed surfaces three times: morning, noon, and late afternoon; 4) ensuring the EPA guidelines on ambient noise are observed by servicing equipment regularly and not working early morning and at night especially in front of noise sensitive development such as schools, churches, hospitals and office; 5) ensuring that construction camp and borrow pit sites are carefully selected and arranged to minimize soil erosion, land degradation, ponding and social conflict; 6) keeping the road sections open for traffic during the construction phase; and 7) prompt payment of compensation for properties demolished or destroyed.
