If we walk together - communities, NGOs, and Government in partnership for health : the Hyderabad experience

This booklet describes the meaningful involvement of communities in Hyderabad, engaged under the Eighth India Population Project (IPP VIII), and its successful achievements. It identifies the factors that enabled IPP VIII in Hyderabad, to engage both, communities and Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs), in making partnerships a reality. An integrated development approach was used for partnership functionality, reaching women and children in the slums, through the "link volunteers", who provided their communities with health and contraceptive information and services, and, in turn, informed government staff on the community health status. The report further elaborates on the community revolving funds, a financial incentive, which has enabled women of the slums to finance not only community improvements, such as sanitation systems, but, has established income generating schemes, as well. Relevant lessons for future development projects are offered, suggesting further strengthening in monitoring community needs. While sustainability is of great concern, its success could bring policy changes, along with active communities' participation.
