Burundi - Issues and options in the energy sector

Burundi faces the problem of ensuring reliable supplies of electric power over the medium- and long-term given the increasing scarcity of fuelwood and other traditional fuels and the high cost of oil imports. Sufficient tree plantation is being done, but should be supplemented by a training program for foresters, an improved forestry extension program, data collection on household fuel consumption, and fuel conservation methods. A hydrological survey and an economic and market assessment for peat should be conducted. Burundi has no domestic oil production or refining activities, and further exploration seems futile. Therefore, priority should be given to a plan for stockpiling of products. The system of price controls maintained on oil products should be revised and international markets should be considered. A strong electricity planning unit should be established to draw up and implement an overall plan for possible site development. The research center should be given funds for research that will provide practical solutions to energy problems.
