India - Primary education achievement and challenges
Srivastava, Jitendra P. | Smith, Nigel J. H. | Forno, Douglas A. [editors]
This report looks at the education situation in India. It answers the question of why investing in private education is important. It examines the remaining challenges, including increasing access and efficiency; improving learning, and reducing equity gaps. Four essential actions for expanding access and improving learning are: a) increasing financing for primary education; b) improving the preparation, motivation, and deployment of teachers; c) improving the quality of textbooks and the efficiency of their production; and d) strengthening management and institutional capacity. In order to simultaneously expand and improve primary education the country must have decentralized planning and management as well as high-level technical administrative support and more resources for primary education. The report concludes with a look at how India can afford all of these needs.
