New Zealand - Transmission Project
Rao, S. R. N. Badri
The Transmission Project for New Zealand will finance the construction of a direct current transmission link between the new Benmore hydroelectric power station in the South Island, and the capital city of Wellington in the North Island. The construction of this link will provide the first interconnection between the grid systems of the North and South Islands. The components of the project are: 1) construction of 350 miles of 500 kv DC high voltage steel tower transmission line from the Benmore power station to the Cook Strait terminal; 2) construction of three high voltage DC submarine cables, each 25 miles long, for the sea crossing of Cook Strait; 3) procurement of converter equipment for the Benmore and Wellington substations; and 4) construction of high voltage terminal substations at Wellington in the North Island and Benmore in the South Island. The transmission link from the hydroelectric power station in the South Island to the capital city of Wellington is the most economic way of providing large increments of power for the North Island.
