1992-1993 Cultural Resources Inventory of 17,068 Acres Within 11 Selected Areas of the Fort Sill Military Reservation, Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

This report presents the results of an intensive archeological survey of 17,068 acres located within 11 parcels of land on the Fort Sill Military Reservation in Comanche County, Oklahoma. Archival research and informant interviews were also conducted to identify potential historic sites and to assess the significance of recorded historic sites. The cultural resource assessments presented here represent one phase of the efforts of the Fort Sill Military Reservation to meet its legal responsibilities for the identification, evaluation, and treatment of cultural resource properties under its jurisdiction. The survey resulted in the identification and recording of 77 archeological sites (with 82 site components) and 51 localities. Of these cultural resource properties, 42 site components and 18 localities date to the prehistoric period, and 40 site components and 29 localities are of the historic period; four of the localities were multicomponent, exhibiting both prehistoric and historic artifacts. Twenty-one sites and six historic mins had been previously recorded within the 11 parcels of land; yet, this survey was able to relocate only 14 sites and four mins. The surficial and fragile nature of the archeological record within this region and the more than 100 years of military training activities have been the primary factors affecting site visibility and survival.
