This is the first of a series of workshops to be held every two years to keep up with advances in the field. The subject matter ranged from the use of fish as sensitive indicators of environmental contaminants to research, more basic in nature Non-immunoglobulin-mediated ('innate') immunity was one of the key topics. Immediate results of xenobiotic influences and immunostimulators can be detected by assays such as phagocytosis, superoxide anion production, chemotaxis and serum lysozyme concentrations. Invertebrate (shellfish) phagocytes were also found to generate superoxide and process xenobiotics. Advances in cytokine studies in fish also bring intervention in fish immune systems within the realm of possibility. Conference, RA III.
