Hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata Royle) is found in rivers, lakes and streams and impounded bodies of water particularly in calcarious sites. It can tolerate moderate amounts of salinity up to 33% sea water strength. It proliferates under low 0.5-0.75% sunlight and therefore is very competitive with native American species. Large mats are often formed at the water surface resulting in a monotypic stand of hydrilla. Large concentrations of the plant are found in Florida Georgia, Louisiana, Texas, Iowa, and California. Hydrilla interferes with fisheries, waterflow, boat traffic and domestic uses of the water.
