APPROXIMATE SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF A FREELY FLOATING CYLINDER IN SURFACE WAVES

Research was directed toward the study of hydrodynamic problems involved in the motion of ships. the investigation was limited to the 2- dimensional problem of an infinitely long circular cylinder. An approximation of the heaving motion in incident waves is obtained by neglecting the diffraction by the moving cylinder. The approximate solution is valid for waves which are long compared to the diameter of the cylinder. Another approximate solution obtained by a different method is in good agreement' with observed values provided the waves are short compared to the diameter. This method involves replacing the usual free surface condition for the velocity potential 0 by the simpler condition0=O. An extension was made of the method to treat freely floating objects. A discussion of the simplified boundary condition is included in the appendix, and it is the proper approximation to use in considering large frequencies. These 2 approximate solutions may be used to predict the heaving motion of the cylinder with good accuracy over almost the entire range of frequencies considered.
