In 1999 as the millennium was drawingto a close, we decided that the timewas right to introduce a new type of website highlighting the contributions thatwomen are making to marine science.We envisioned a web site where womenconsidering careers in oceanographycould read about the experiences ofsuccessful women and learn from theirchoices; that would convey the excitementof groundbreaking research inoceanography and serve as a resource forteachers, scientists, and the general public;and that would celebrate a group ofremarkable women and bring a humanface to those working in marine science.
