This chapter is an expansion of Veth et al. (2000) and includes additional information. Duringarchaeological reconnaissance of the western coasts of the Aru Islands in 1995 a remarkablecomplex of major stone ruins was located near the contemporary village of Ujir (Fig. 5.1). Initialinspection of the settlement revealed a considerable number of stone structures covering whatappeared to be several architectural phases. The structures are heavily overgrown by secondaryrainforest and are located directly adjacent to a sungai or tidal channel, forming a deep naturalharbour.
